Piscataqua Savings Bank is the proud supporter of over 110 Seacoast area nonprofits. We’re highlighting a few of the nonprofits doing incredible, critical work in our Seacoast community with our Seacoast Spotlight Series. Next up in our spotlight is Cross Roads House.
For nearly four decades, Cross Roads House has been a beacon of hope in the New Hampshire Seacoast area, working with homeless individuals and families to stabilize, find housing, and return to being thriving members of their communities. Their unwavering commitment to their mission has made a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
History: A Beacon of Compassion
In the winter of 1982, the escalating homelessness problem in the NH Seacoast area prompted a group of compassionate citizens to take action. They recognized the urgency of the situation and the dire need for emergency shelter. It was during this crucial period that Cross Roads House was established, marking the beginning of a profound journey.
As awareness of the hardships faced by homeless individuals grew, so did the scope of Cross Roads House. What started as a small initiative in 1982 has since transformed into one of the largest emergency and transitional shelters in New Hampshire. Their reach extends across eastern New Hampshire and southern Maine, providing vital support to the homeless population.
Today, Cross Roads House remains a steadfast provider of shelter and assistance. On any given night, they provide shelter for approximately 100 people, creating a safe haven during the most challenging times.
Programs & Services: Rebuilding Lives
Cross Roads House goes beyond just providing shelter. They offer an array of programs and services designed to empower their residents to regain their independence and achieve sustainable housing. With a proven track record, Cross Roads House equips their residents with the tools they need to set and accomplish tangible goals.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Cross Roads House is their success in helping people transition from homelessness to permanent housing. Through their transitional program, the majority of participants leave Cross Roads House with renewed hope, clear objectives, and the skills to turn their lives around.
What sets Cross Roads House apart is its commitment to addressing the multifaceted needs of the homeless population. They partner with local service providers to deliver a wide range of supportive services right on-site. These collaborative efforts help eliminate barriers that might prevent residents from accessing essential care.
Families First Health & Support Center and Health Care for the Homeless provide critical healthcare services to residents, ensuring that their physical and mental health needs are met. Cross Roads House collaborates with Seacoast Mental Health Center to provide mental health and psychiatric care, recognizing the importance of addressing mental well-being. In addition to medical care, residents have access to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, offering a support system to help them overcome addiction.
Recognizing that access to transportation can be a barrier, Cross Roads House provides free transportation via the COAST trolley, ensuring that residents can access critical services and employment opportunities.
In conclusion, Cross Roads House is more than just a shelter; it’s a sanctuary of hope and transformation. Their history, mission, and comprehensive programs and services reflect their dedication to helping homeless individuals and families find their way back to a stable, independent life. Their tireless work, coupled with community support, paves the way for a brighter future for those facing homelessness in the NH Seacoast area.
