According to the CDC, an estimated 2.5 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, altering the course of their lives in an instant. The journey to recovery can be long and challenging, requiring not only medical care but also social and emotional support. That’s where Krempels Brain Injury Center comes in – a nonprofit organization based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by brain injury.

A Safe Haven for Brain Injury Survivors

Krempels was founded in 1995 by David Krempels, a traumatic brain injury survivor who envisioned a supportive community where others facing similar challenges could find connection, purpose, and empowerment. What began as a small support group has since grown into a thriving nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of adults living with brain injuries.

Krempels offers a community-based, holistic approach that goes beyond traditional rehabilitation services. Rather than focusing solely on medical treatment, the center emphasizes personal growth, independence, and social engagement. Members participate in a variety of programs, including cognitive workshops, creative expression sessions, wellness initiatives, and peer support groups. Through these offerings, Krempels fosters an environment where individuals can regain confidence, develop new skills, and rebuild meaningful lives, all while being supported by a compassionate and understanding community.

A Person-Centered Approach to Recovery

One of the most impactful aspects of Krempels is its diverse range of programs, designed to address the unique challenges faced by brain injury survivors while catering to their individual needs. The center’s programming is structured around four key pillars that contribute to an improved quality of life:

  • Positive Self-Acceptance: Helping members embrace their identities and adapt to life after a brain injury.
  • Possibility: Encouraging members to explore new opportunities and set personal goals.
  • Participation: Creating an inclusive environment where individuals can engage socially and actively contribute to their community.
  • Purpose: Supporting members in finding meaningful activities that bring fulfillment and direction to their lives.

By prioritizing individualized support, Krempels ensures that each member has the resources they need to work toward their personal goals, whether it’s improving daily living skills, building social connections, or finding new ways to engage with the world around them.

Recognizing Brain Injury Awareness Month

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to highlight the prevalence of brain injuries and the need for support services like those provided by Krempels. According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), more than 5.3 million people in the United States live with a disability related to a brain injury. Despite its widespread impact, brain injury is often referred to as an “invisible disability” because its effects, such as memory loss, cognitive difficulties, and emotional changes, are not always immediately apparent.

Brain Injury Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to educate the public about the causes, consequences, and resources available for brain injury survivors. It’s also a time to advocate for policies that improve access to rehabilitation, job opportunities, and long-term care for those affected. Organizations like Krempels play a crucial role in this effort, ensuring that individuals receive not just medical treatment but the ongoing support they need to lead fulfilling lives.

How You Can Get Involved

Supporting Krempel’s mission is a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of brain injury survivors. Whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, there are many ways to contribute:

  • Donate: Financial contributions help sustain Krempel’s programs and services.
  • Volunteer: Giving your time can have a direct impact on members’ lives.
